Who Am I Without My Title? Rethinking Success

Remember that vision board you created? The one with the perfect job, the corner office, and all those shiny accolades? Yeah, I had one of those too. But let me tell you there’s so much more to life than what we can pin on a board.

I used to think my career was everything. It wasn’t just what I did, it was who I was. Every achievement, every promotion felt like a validation of my worth. Sound familiar? I bet it does for many of you go-getters out there.

But here’s the thing, as my career continued to excel, and I checked off more boxes of success, a question that was once a whisper started to become a roar – who am I outside of this? When the workday ends and the title is stripped away, what’s left?

This realization hit me like a ton of bricks one late night at the office. There I was, surrounded by empty coffee cups, staring at my screen with bleary eyes, when suddenly I thought, “Why am I doing this?” The sense of accomplishment I used to feel was gone, replaced by a deep emptiness. In that moment, I realized I was pouring everything into my career, chasing validation, but losing touch with what really made me happy.

It was my wake-up call. And now, I’m sharing it with you.

Here’s the truth, folks: Your career is important, but it’s not your entire identity. You are so much more than your job title or your latest accomplishment. You’re a friend, a family member, a dreamer, an explorer. You’re someone with passions and interests that extend far beyond the confines of your office walls.

So, how do we break free from this career-identity trap? Here are a few strategies that helped me:

  • Rediscover old hobbies: Remember that guitar gathering dust in the corner? It’s time to pick it up again.
  • Try something new: Always wanted to try salsa dancing? Go for it! The point is to explore aspects of yourself outside of work.
  • Nurture relationships: Invest time in the people who know the real you, not just your professional persona.
  • Practice mindfulness: Take time each day to check in with yourself. How are you feeling beyond your career concerns?
  • Redefine success: Start measuring your life’s success by more than just professional achievements. How kind were you today? Did you learn something new? Did you make someone smile?

Remember, you are not your job. You’re a complex, multifaceted individual with so much to offer the world beyond your professional skills. It’s time to rediscover all those other amazing parts of you.

So, I challenge you this week: Take one step towards reconnecting with your true self outside of work. It could be as simple as reading a book for pleasure or calling an old friend. Whatever it is, do it for you – not for your resume.

Are you ready for this journey of self-rediscovery? If you’re feeling stuck and need guidance on how to reconnect with your authentic self while still excelling in your career, I’ve got something special for you.
